Quotation guidance · Reviewed 24 September 2026
What information helps a roofer quote for a flat roof?
Explain the work, share safely available plans or photos and distinguish approximate area from a measured specification.
Describe the work
Say whether this is a repair, replacement or new roof. Describe visible symptoms, the affected building and what you want to achieve. If you know the existing covering or insulation, include it; if not, leave it unknown. The offering’s required questions determine which facts are needed before an initial quote.
Area or dimensions
Use the measurement requested by the supplier: area in square metres, or separately labelled length and width in metres. Keep the original measurements and indicate estimates in your notes. A simple rectangular plan 4 m by 3 m has a plan area of 12 m², but that is not a material order or a complete roofing specification. Upstands, openings, drainage and the actual construction need supplier assessment.
Keep both feet safely on the ground
Do not climb onto a roof, use a ladder or approach a fragile surface to complete this form. Use existing plans, information you already have and photographs taken from a safe location. If these are unavailable, describe the job and say that a survey is needed. Never disturb a suspect material to identify it.
What can come later
Add safe photographs, existing plans and access information if available. Installation dates and preferences can be refined after the initial enquiry unless the offering explicitly requires them. Ask the contractor to state the work included, assumptions and whether a survey is needed before confirming the price.
