Preparing a pitched-roof quote request

Describe the roof and work needed without guessing pitch, technical quantities or access requirements.

Explain the job and visible condition

Describe repair, re-roofing or new work, the building and the affected area. Mention visible leaks or damage and the covering if known. Photographs from safe ground-level positions and existing drawings can help a contractor understand the request.

Do not turn a footprint into roof area

A building footprint is not the sloping roof surface area. If you know only the footprint, label it as that. Leave pitch or covering quantities unknown unless they are documented. Preserve measurements and units from drawings without silently converting them into an installation specification.

Keep both feet safely on the ground

Do not climb onto a roof, use a ladder or approach a fragile surface to complete this form. Use existing plans, information you already have and photographs taken from a safe location. If these are unavailable, describe the job and say that a survey is needed. Never disturb a suspect material to identify it.

Use a survey when needed

An initial estimate can depend on stated assumptions. Ask the contractor to explain what is included and what needs inspection. The supplier’s review should establish final quantities, access, suitability and any applicable specification before an order is confirmed.
